Thomas J. Pappas School - right here in our neighborhood
The Thomas J. Pappas School was founded in 1989. In its early existence there were only 8 children and the school was held at a shelter. Soon it became obvious there were going to be more children, and needed to move to other locations in the downtown Phoenix area. In 1990, Dr. Sandra E. Dowling started the Thomas J. Pappas School in a renovated car dealership, where we remained for 6 years. In 1997, the new Pappas School was built for children Kindergarten through 5th grade. The old location is now the Pappas Jr. High and High School.
Our Mission
The mission of Thomas J. Pappas school is to develop within all students the leadership qualities to fulfill their roles as responsible citizens of a changing world. We provide an equitable education that promotes inquiry, positive decision-making, effective communication, cultural appreciation, and life long learning experiences. We provide enrichment opportunities to curtail homelessness.

We are committed to teaching the history of the BUFFALO SOLDIERS in general and the 9th U.S.Cavalry in particular.
Our goals are firmly set in reaching the young minds and hearts of our youth and educating the general public on the sacrifice and courage of what is considered, even today in military circles, as one of the finest and most dedicated fighting units in the history of this country; they just happen to be black. These Officers and Men of the 9th U.S. Cavalry fought to make the civilian population of the West secure in their quest for places of their own and to realize their peace and security did NOT come cheap.
The men of the 9th were never heard, much less acknowledged or recognized. We as descendents and beneficiaries of this outstanding legacy have a duty to insure these men get the recognition they deserve and finally to take their rightful places in the written and visual history of our country.
The Salt River Brass
Picture 27 brass and percussion virtuosi crafting the upbeat brilliance of a military band, the full-throated sonorities of a symphony orchestra, and the warm intimate sounds of a chamber group. This is the Salt River Brass band, with the versatility to program everything from light classics and marches to show tunes and folk melodies.

Noah's Ark is a safe, no-kill haven for abused, abandoned, traumatized and special needs cats, kittens, puppies and dogs. Personally fostered in homes that provide a loving environment, these "babies" regain trust and are gradually transitioned into permanent homes. We are also one of the very few animal rescues that accepts owner turn-ins, giving abandoned animals the chance at a new life.
